Er ist wirklich schlau! Ich wollte den Jetlag nämlich auch nicht haben. Vor allem, wenn man ihn in Plönplöng vermutet, Bilder aus Madrid bekommt und er plötzlich in Tokyo einen Film vorstellt, nur um am Wochenende vor dem Live Ticker zu hocken.... Allein vom Nachdenken wie oft er in einer Woche um die Welt geflogen ist bekomm ich schon einen Jetlag!!

"I think it helps to have an understanding of what the entire 24 hours is going to be like," Dempsey said. "Last year, I didn't really have an understanding. Certainly, getting out the pits was my first realization. Every time I go out, I'm much slower and careful.

"I think that has a lot do with it, knowing what it's going to take as far as what the various stages are (of the race) and just relax into it keeping a pace that is going to conserve the equipment and just stay out of trouble and keep running and hopefully we can be there at the end."

The Dempsey race team is small in number and short on funding, but big on enthusiasm. "We only have five guys, but we work hard and laugh a lot," he noted. "Joe Foster leads the team and is my co-driver and without him and his ability to lead people, we couldn't get it done." He emphasized that Foster provides the desire, passion and intellectual understanding it takes to operate the team.

Dempsey admits to being smitten with endurance racing. A year ago he drove in his first 24-hour race and for him, two firsts occurred: he climbed in the race car in the middle of the night and it was raining at the time. He tried to talk his way out of the 3 a.m. assignment but Foster wouldn't budge. "We finished every race we started last year," he noted with a smile. "Winning endurance races means being there at the end and never giving up; that's why it is so exciting for me."

He indicated that racing has helped him to grow and it has had a calming influence on his life. "I love being around the sound of the cars and the smells that are in the air. It is very relaxing and it helps calm me down. In a way, it is like being on vacation and relaxing." Dempsey compares racing to the movie business, and says there is stress and intensity in each profession.


For the Rolex24 at Daytona, Dempsey and Foster will co-drive with Florida residents Charles Espenlaub and Tim Lewis Jr. When Dempsey can't make a race, Espenlaub will take his place.

The television studio sets his schedule, but Dempsey lets them know he needs to race as often as possible, to learn and stay sharp. "Playing catch-up is difficult and that happened to me at Watkins Glen a year ago," he said. "Racing is my passion and I want to continue to improve. The more experience I have the more comfortable I am in the car."

Dempsey is surrounded by adoring fans while at the track and even though he is often mobbed, he talks to everyone and poses for dozens of pictures with his admirers. His competitors have also learned that he is rapidly emerging as an accomplished driver, and they, too, are impressed with his talents.

When the green flag drops for the Rolex24 at Daytona, many fans will be watching for the No. 40 Mazda RX-8 trimmed in a flashy pink color. Dempsey, his three co-drivers and their small team will be focused on being competitive and taking whatever steps it can to reach the finish line 24 hours after the race starts. To finish a 24-hour race is a victory in itself.

DAYTONA BEACH -- The strong connection between Daytona International Speedway and Hollywood continues this week when TV actor Patrick Dempsey makes his second attempt in the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

The Speedway has welcomed a long line of Tinseltown residents over the years including Gene Hackman, Craig T. Nelson, Tim Allen and, of course, Paul Newman.

Dempsey hopes to carry on the Newman tradition of excellence in the twice-around-the-clock sportscar race, which starts Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and grinds on through Sunday afternoon. Newman , who passed away last year after a battle with cancer, is the only thespian to score a victory in this prestigious race.

He teamed with Tom Kendall, Michael Brockman and Mark Martin in a Ford Mustang to claim GT honors in 1995.

Newman had a major influence on Dempsey.

"Paul Newman did a phenomenal job as a driver and he came into it later in life," Dempsey said.

"He was a great driver, a great actor and also an incredible man in what he's given to the world.

"That's an inspiration for me certainly. I don't think anybody will fill his shoes. He's someone I have tremendous respect for and hopefully, we can keep that spirit alive and keep moving that forward."

Dempsey has jumped in with both feet this season. He now owns a team, Dempsey Racing, which will campaign a GT-class Mazda RX-8 in the Grand-Am Rolex Series this season.

Yes, he's doing quite well as an actor, but he's also trying to built this little race team into something special, very special.

"We put every ounce of our money and energy into the car," he said. "We don't have the fancy driving suits or anything. People should be able to come in here and be competitive and not just have a big budget.

"That's what we're trying to prove. It's tough. We'd like to have the money to do extra testing, get more equipment and things like that. We have desire and passion. We have the resources and intellectual understanding of how to run a team."

Right now, Dempsey is cultivating his race driver skills and building a team. Down the road, he hopes to give other aspiring drivers the chance to show their talent in Dempsey Racing equipment.

"Expand the program," he said. "We need to get through this year and deal with the economic issues everybody is dealing with, then expand the program so we have more cars next year, and get drivers who deserve the opportunity and have been around a long time.

"I'd love to be able to be in position financially and give those guys rides and not worry about the money. I know what Mazda has done with me as a driver and I'd like to extend that (to others)."

Dempsey's car will be easy to see on the track. The No. 40 Mazda has a pink hood, as part of a sponsorship package with Avon. He will share the car with Joe Foster and Charles Espenlaub. Foster is his racing mentor.

Dempsey said his new role as car owner has added stress to his racing efforts, but he can't get enough of the sport and what it offers.

"I love it so much," he said. "I love being around the cars, the sounds, the smell. There's something about that that calms me down. It's like a vacation in a lot of ways.

"It's a complete passion," he added. "I want to continue to improve and be competitive out there. The more experience I have, the more comfortable I am. My fellow actors think I'm crazy for the most part."

DAYTONA BEACH -- After grabbing the hearts of television fans, the actor who plays McDreamy on ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" hopes to earn a place in the hearts of racing fans.

Patrick Dempsey, aka Dr. Derek Shepherd, will take to the track for the second year at the Rolex 24 with his team, Dempsey Racing, in the No. 40 Mazda flanked with pink for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

The Los Angeles father of three arrived in Daytona Beach late Wednesday after filming scenes for "Grey's" fifth season.

"They're very good about scheduling around the race. This is the event you don't want to miss," Dempsey said.

Fresh off the track Thursday from practice, he was stopped by racing and "Grey's" fan Judy Riley of Vero Beach. She met him last year, but said, "he's Dr. McDreamy. I mean, come on, why wouldn't I want to meet him" again?

Dempsey, who turned 43 last week, said it was good for him and his team to get "comfortable with the cars. It's just exciting to witness it all."

Here's more about the show and racing:

Q: What got you interested in racing? "We (he and his father) would always watch the Indy 500 at home (in Maine) and the Daytona 500. That was in the '70s growing up. He died about 20 years ago. I think he would be real proud. I think he'd be more proud about me racing than acting."

Q: Have you gotten any fellow actors in the race car? "No. Eric Dane (Grey's' Dr. Mark 'McSteamy' Sloan) went to a 500 with me. But I don't think he's been bitten by the bug yet. Some of them think it's great. Others wonder what I'm doing."

Q: As far as "Grey's," will Derek and Meredith get married or will she get cold feet? "The next few episodes, Derek's character gets a lot darker. A lot is coming up for him that distracts (from the whole Derek and Meredith relationship)." But he added, "They have to get married. I don't know how they couldn't. Possibly this year. I know the next few episodes but not after that."

Q: What was your reaction to the whole McDreamy title and do you see yourself as a heartthrob? "No, I don't. I think it's a projection of the character. It's certainly flattering, but I know it's not me at all."

Q: Do family and friends tease you about it? "Initially, yes, when the name started coming about. It became actually a bit of a joke."

Q: Are you worried about the direction of the show and changes with some actors leaving recently? Filming 24 to 25 episodes a year is "a lot of work for anyone. You do the best you can each week. It's up to the writers and what their vision is. I try not to judge or complain about it. I hope we can continue entertaining people and work through these things."

Q: I read that you juggled in high school and placed third nationally and rode a unicycle? Do you still juggle? "It's funny, in the promos for our racing team, I do some juggling." He said the commercial may be airing during the Rolex on Fox Sports. When asked if he was juggling wrenches, he laughed and said, "No, I think it was beanbags."

Q: Does it help with coordination on the track? "I think hand and eye coordination is very important. That is something that is a value."

Q: What do you like about coming to Daytona? "Seeing all the history here. I always enjoy coming to the track and being around other drivers and the camaraderie and fellowship of that."

Q: Do you think you'll ever race in the 500? "I don't know if that will ever happen. I want to concentrate on road racing and getting faster and improving."

Q: Tell me about your twin sons and fatherhood and your daughter. They must keep you busy? "The twins are about to turn 2 on Feb. 1. Two boys at the age of 2 is non-stop energy. It's exhausting. It's great fun, but it's a lot of work. And having a 7-year-old daughter, there's always a lot going on at the house."

Q: Are you working on any upcoming movies after recently starring in Disney's "Enchanted" and the romantic comedy "Made of Honor?" He said there's a potential actors strike that is affecting production of movies. "I think it's a huge mistake to strike right now." He also said signing up for a movie is a "double-edged sword" because it will impact his racing. "I'd have to find something that allows me to do both."

Q: What do you do when you're not racing, taking care of kids and acting? He said he cycles 25 to 40 miles a day either outside or on a stationery bike. He'll be participating in October in a 100-mile cycling event in Maine to benefit the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing that opened there last year. Dempsey, whose wife, Jillian, is a makeup artist and has her own cosmetics line, launched his cologne with Avon called "Unscripted" late last year. "It's pretty busy. But I'm very grateful for having a job at this point. Every day when I get up, I'm very grateful."

Q: What about your charity work and the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in Maine? "We really wanted to help people experiencing cancer in their life -- either themselves or family members." He said his mom has had four bouts with ovarian cancer and is doing well now. But when she was first diagnosed, there was nowhere to turn for information.

Q: I read that you have dyslexia. Is that something you share with young people to inspire them that they can make it? He said it was diagnosed when he was 12. "It was always something I had to make the most of and come to terms with. It affects your whole being. That was the hand I was dealt. You have to make the most of it. It made me who I am today. It has been a struggle and continues to be. " He said it's noticeable when he has to ask people to repeat their names, for example, or when he's reading his scenes.

Q: You were at the Golden Globes recently presenting. How fun was that and did you ever think 10 years ago you would be mingling with Clint Eastwood and Dustin Hoffman? "That was great. It was fun being backstage and watching people come in and out. It's always fun to be out and around everybody." He said he had a funny moment with singer Marc Anthony when they were trying to find their seats and couldn't get back to the tables on time.
